A member of the Democratic Party, Clinton was known as the New Democrat. Before serving as president, he served as governor of Arkansas from 1979-1981, then again in 1983-92. As governor, he oversaw the education of the state and served as chairman of the National Governors Association. Clinton was elected president in 1992, defeating Republican opposition George H. W. Bush. At 46, he became the third-youngest president in history. Clinton was the long-time president of the long-awaited economic expansion of American history. After graduating, Clinton became a professor of law at the University of Arkansas. In 1976, Clinton became Arkansas Attorney General. Clinton defeated Lynn Low, a Republican candidate in Tuscany, in 1978, and was elected governor of Arkansas.
Clinton was just 32 years old when he took office, the youngest governor in the country at that time, and the second-youngest governor in Arkansas history. In 1982, he was elected governor for the second time and held office for ten years. Effective with the 1986 election, Arkansas changed the tenure of his domination from two to four years.
